Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price urges Australians to celebrate Australia Day amidst calls for violence and destruction from activists. She warns against the dangers of unchecked activism, citing recent antisemitic attacks as evidence.
Shadow Indigenous Australians minister Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has issued a strong warning against any form of violence on Australia Day, amidst calls for monument destruction and flag burning. Senator Price urged Australians to celebrate the national day, emphasizing that the nation must not tolerate violent activism. She cited the recent rise in antisemitic attacks as a stark reminder of the consequences when threats go unchecked.
'We have seen all too recently in our country what happens when we fail to stop those who would resort to violent forms of activism early on,' she stated. Senator Price condemned calls for disruption and violence, particularly those advocating for the destruction of war memorials and the burning of the national flag. She expressed her expectation that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese would publicly denounce these violent threats in the strongest possible terms. Despite the calls for disruption, recent polling has revealed a surge in support for Australia Day, with 69% of respondents agreeing with the January 26 date. This increase in support is attributed, in part, to a rejection of 'elite' opinions, particularly following the divisive Voice to Parliament referendum. Senator Price noted that the referendum played a role in empowering Australians to express their support for the national day, as it gave people permission to push back against loud minorities who do not represent the views of the majority. She highlighted the importance of democratic values, such as freedom of speech and the ability to engage in respectful debate without fear of violence or retribution, as cherished aspects of Australian society. Senator Price also emphasized the significance of citizenship ceremonies held on Australia Day, where new Australians from diverse backgrounds are welcomed. 'People from many other countries and cultures receive citizenship on Australia Day, showing that other people have recognized what a wonderful place this is to live,' she said. She underscored that Australia's acceptance of people from around the world makes it a diverse nation united by its love for and allegiance to this beautiful country. While many advocate for a day of celebration, others, particularly Indigenous Australians, see the date as a painful reminder of the hardships of colonization. Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister Patrick Gorman stated that Australia Day is a day to 'respect, reflect and celebrate.' He emphasized the need to acknowledge the nation's complex history, particularly the past experiences of First Nations Peoples. Mr. Gorman recently announced $10 million in financial support for community events to be hosted on Australia Day 2025. This funding, however, represents a significant decline compared to the previous year when former prime minister Scott Morrison allocated approximately $30 million in grants
