“The idea is to put the money in the hands of the residents and let them do what they want to do,” she said. “We’ll see if they bite.”
is offering three grants of up to $2,500 to help people in the community host events that promote diversity in the city.Colleen Jackson, the city’s chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer, said the grants are funded from the Shaker Heights diversity committee’s budget and can be for anything ranging from book clubs, block parties or movie screenings to workshops or discussion panels.
“We’re not trying to be very descriptive because we want people to be creative with what they want to do,” Jackson said.Jackson is tasked with incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion into the city’s policies and decision-making process. She wants the grants to support those doing similar work in the community.
“I might have the title of DEI Officer, but it’s really community work,” she said. “Everybody has to do something. I can’t just tell people what to think.” She acknowledged that $2,500 isn’t a ton of money, but hopes it will help offset the costs of something like providing food for the event, renting a venue or paying a speaker fee.
