Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy have been close friends for over two decades and the Offaly man has admitted he is 'protective' of the four-time major winner
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy have shared heartfelt insights into the strength of their friendship, with Lowry admitting he feels 'protective' of the world's number two. The pair, who cut their teeth in Ireland's underage ranks before turning professional, have developed a tight-knit bond over the years.
He candidly spoke about his own challenges: "Sometimes I've struggled with the balance of trying to be the best golfer, trying to be the best husband or the best dad. Sometimes I get overwhelmed, and it can be a little too much for me. After making headlines in 2024 for a surprising split from his wife Erica which was later resolved, McIlroy is no stranger to media scrutiny. When asked whether this makes him protective of McIlroy, Lowry's response reflects the depth of their friendship.
"When I hang out with him, I am myself, and I think I am probably a breath of fresh air for him at times. You know, he can just get away and be himself and be normal. I feel I am good for him, but he is really good for me.
