Shanghai authorities have urged residents to stay at home this weekend as China’s most populous city grapples with a huge spike in Covid infections. Since the government ended its strict lockdown policy, up to 5,000 people are dying of Covid every day.

But while many citizens have welcomed the end of the strict quarantine and lockdown policies, the resulting outbreak has dampened celebrations.China has been rocked by a huge spike in Covid infections which has seen over 37 million people catch the virus in a single day ‘There’s only a certain amount of customers we can accept given our manpower, with a majority of team members who are unwell at the moment,’ said Jacqueline Mocatta, who works in the hospitality industry.
‘I originally planned to go to Shanghai for Christmas but now I can only lie in bed,’ a person wrote on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social network.
