Only the top earners can afford to take shared parental leave – and many dads aren't even aware of its existence

Most dads can't afford to take shared parental leave , according to research. The policy – which was introduced 10 years ago – allows mums to end their maternity leave early and share the rest of the leave with their partner.

The group found that 60% of those taking shared parental leave were in the 20% of top earners. While only 5% who take up shared parental leave were in the bottom 50% of earners. The Dad Shift says: 'SPL is too poorly paid, too complicated, and forces dads to take leave from mums. Designed to give employed parents more choice when it comes to childcare, Shared Parental Leave allows mums to end their maternity leave early and share the remaining time and statutory pay with your partner.

'You can use SPL to take leave in blocks separated by periods of work, or take it all in one go. You can also choose to be off work together or to stagger the leave and pay.'
