A resident who caught vision of the dead animal north of Wollongong on his lunchbreak says he hopes it creates impetus for change.
A NSW man has captured vision of a dolphin caught in a controversial shark net off Thirroul Beach.Vision of a dead dolphin entangled in a shark net north of Wollongong on the NSW south coast has reignited community calls for the nets to be removed.
"I popped the drone out and flew it out and to my horror there was a dolphin stuck in the net," he said. A spokesperson confirmed a contractor retrieved the 2.2-metre Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, and biological samples, before the carcass was towed out to sea and disposed of.Mr Armstrong shared the vision to the local Facebook community page where it attracted dozens of comments condemning the nets."It's the ocean, it's their domain, it's pretty sad to see marine animals being killed."In NSW, 51 nets are in place between Newcastle and Wollongong from September to April.
"This dolphin would have been desperately trying to free themselves, eventually drowning in their own home," she said.The DPI spokesperson said frequent inspections of shark nets are carried out by the department to minimise the impact on marine animals.
