The woman who has spent the best part of a decade empowering British women to have greater understanding, choice and control over their treatment during menopause this week found her reputation was close to being in tatters The documentary featured several patients from her privately run clinics, Newson Health, who told the BBC that they had experienced complications. 'We treat every patient on an individualised basis. Some women don't absorb oestrogen as easily as others. I don't.' Louise stands by her work 100 per cent in her first interview since the fallout.Pictured: With Professor Sebastian Crutch on This Morning 'They said, 'We've got Menopause Matters. We don't need another website'. But, no one was really talking about the menopause back then. I said, 'This affects 14million women. Why can't we have more than one website? All I'm trying to do is raise a debate. I don't know why you're being so hostile'.'

'I said, 'I don't think it is. I feel very strongly if 100 per cent of women want HRT they should be able to have it'. Louise is a highly qualified doctor. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and a visiting fellow at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University. She has a weekly podcast, a free 'balance menopause' support app that has had more than a million downloads, has written many books on the subject and serves on the Government's Menopause Taskforce.

'The number of people who have said this is a witch hunt has been huge,' she says. 'I'm trying so hard not to wobble but the next morning I woke up really upset. It was the enormity of it.' She's also credited with removing taboos about the menopause, and getting a conversation started, which has been taken up by celebrities such as Davina McCall and Mariella Frostrup. Pictured: On This Morning with Tanya BardsleyShe was just nine years old when she lost her own father William, a hovercraft pilot, to a brain tumour. His death has, in a sense, made her who she is today.

Louise has wanted a career in medicine for as long as she can remember. Following her father's death, she wanted to specialise in oncology and began her studies at Manchester University where she met her husband, Paul Anderson, now a urological surgeon. They married in 1997. With two children under two, who she was determined would not be brought up by nannies, she began writing medical articles and studied to become a GP instead of pursing a career in oncology. 'I was having quite a lot of night sweats, awful headaches and was feeling pathologically tired,' says Louise. 'My mood was really low and I was just miserable. I couldn't be bothered to cook and was shouting a lot. As her own hot flushes began, she was asked by the Royal College of GPs to summarise the freshly published 2015 menopause guidance by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence . I remember thinking it was really transformative for women's health.

There are, in fact, thousands of messages of support Louise has received from women whose lives she's changed. Pictured: With Professor Sebastian Crutch on This Morning
