A woman whose former colleague put out a desperate plea on Facebook for an organ donor has saved his life after offering him one of her kidneys.
In an 'immediate' decision, Lauren got in touch with her offer of help. After numerous tests, it was swiftly confirmed they shared the same blood group and tissue type, meaning they were a perfect match for a transplant. After Lauren's selfless offer, tests were carried out before it was confirmed her kidney was a match for Jamie. It was a daunting decision - but one in her dad's memory.
But in January 2022, some 13 years later, the donor kidney failed. It sent him spiralling back to the harrowing situation he found himself in as a teenager, relying on hours of being hooked up to kidney dialysis machine for hours a day just to survive. "I got fed up wondering when the call was going to come. It's so hard to live a normal life when you're just waiting for that . There was a lot of uncertainty. I did my best to be patient, but felt like I needed to try and do something myself to find a donor."
"I wasn't really expecting anybody to pay much attention to it," Jamie told the M.E.N. "I was surprised when I checked the next day that Lauren had messaged me, not only to find out more, but seemed really serious about doing it and had already phoned the hospital to find out about getting tested. "It's a huge sense of relief that I potentially did my last haemodialysis just yesterday and it might be the last time I have to go through it for 20 years or more. The thought of that is mind-blowing and the thought of what the next six months could mean for me."
