Henderson's 12-year career at Anfield came to a surprise end in the summer when the 33-year-old joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, who are managed by Steven Gerrard. Henderson has previously been an advocate for the Rainbow Laces campaign, an annual event that aims to show solidarity with the LGBT community in sport.
Henderson has vowed to play international football for as long as possible and received backing from Gareth Southgate post-match. Speaking to the Rest Is Football podcast, former England captain Shearer also backed the midfielder - questioning what fans would do if placed in a similar position. "You can't blame him for that . The work he has done off the field, as well as on the field. He's been a great captain for Liverpool - a fantastic leader. He's taken Liverpool to heights that they hadn't been to for a long time.
