Shell accused of trying to 'silence climate protests' as it sues protestors for high-seas boarding of drilling platform

Shell accused of trying to ‘silence climate protests’ as it sues protestors for high-seas boarding of drilling platformis suing environmental activist group Greenpeace for $2.1m in damages after environmental protesters occupied a vessel transporting one of the oil company’s floating platforms earlier this year.activists boarded the vessel in January near the Canary Islands off the Atlantic coast of northern Africa to protest oil drilling and travelled on it as far as Norway.

They are also seeking a legal undertaking that all Greenpeace organisations around the world would agree to never protest on its infrastructure again, at sea or in port anywhere in the world. Shell have warned if the case does go to trial Greenpeace risked legal fees which “could amount to further millions.”

“Now he’s trying to crush Greenpeace’s ability to campaign, and in doing so, seeking to silence legitimate demands for climate justice and payment for loss and damage. We need this case to be thrown out and for Shell to be regulated by the government because it’s clear Sawan is hell-bent on profit, regardless of human cost.”
