Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes that Wayne Rooney, despite his recent struggles as a manager, could be a valuable asset as a striking coach for the Red Devils.
Teddy Sheringham has shared his belief that Wayne Rooney could be a good striking coach at Manchester United. The former Reds captain has experienced difficulties in management following unsuccessful stints at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle in the Championship. Rooney was dismissed by Plymouth last month after a series of five losses in six games, leaving Plymouth at the bottom of the Championship.
Rooney's struggles have raised questions about his long-term managerial prospects, with his options limited after being sacked from his previous two positions. Many have suggested that the 39-year-old could pursue a career in media after impressing as a TV pundit at last summer's European Championships. However, former United striker Sheringham believes the former England star could still have a role in coaching as part of Ruben Amorim's team at Old Trafford. He proposes that Rooney, who scored a club-record 253 goals for the Reds, might be able to provide invaluable guidance to Rasmus Hojlund as the Danish striker continues to develop at Old Trafford. Hojlund has scored 23 times for United since joining from Atalanta in August 2023 but is yet to become the consistent goalscorer United desperately needs. 'Would Wayne Rooney be a good striking coach? Without a doubt,' he stated via BoyleSports. 'I think it is a very important role nowadays. There are set-piece coaches, back four coaches, striker coaches and Wayne's been one of the top players in the country. 'Could he help Rasmus Hojlund? Of course. He's an experienced player that's played for his country a hundred times and scored goals at the top level. So any advice from him you would have to listen to.
