Shirley Ballas reveals she softened her approach on Strictly Come Dancing after her son, Mark, expressed surprise at her initial sternness. Ballas credits the show with providing her a platform for charity work and acknowledges her co-star Claudia Winkleman's popularity with her son.
Strictly Come Dancing star Shirley Ballas has admitted that she had to change her attitude after the way she behaved on the show left her son 'shocked'. Chatting to Platinum magazine, the lead judge on the BBC show revealed how she had to make a change to how she behaved on Strictly after a comment from her son, Mark Ballas. Shirley explained: 'I started very strict and firm and my son was shocked when he first watched in 2017.
So, over the years I've learnt to remove the walls I put up around me.' Despite admitting that she initially had a very stern exterior when she first appeared on the show seven years ago, she said that her attitude has changed as she has a 'twinkle in her eye'. The judge added: 'I've let the audience in and I'd like to think they see I can deliver my critiques with a twinkle in my eye.' Shirley went on to compliment the role that the hit BBC show has played in her life. She said that it has enabled her to focus time on another one of her passions: 'Professionally, Strictly has given me an enormous platform for my charity work. I devote 40 per cent of my time to my charities and wouldn't be able to do this if I didn't have Strictly.' Earlier this month Shirley gave another insight into her son's opinions of the popular dancing competition as he apparently prefers watching one of her co-stars over her. She told Heat magazine: 'But I have to say, I said to my son Mark, who lives in LA, 'There are lots of ladies to choose from', and he goes, 'Mum, don't be offended, but it's Claudia Winkleman!' Our Claudia is a huge success on the other side of the Atlantic.'
