Absolutely barbaric.
Lions are being bred and killed for their bones, which are used in traditional medicine The demand for traditional medicine is fuelling a boom in the number of lions being bred and killed for their bones, experts have warned.
Head of policy at the Born Free Foundation, Mark Jones, told Metro.co.uk: ‘Lions are not designed to be raised in captivity. This is all about cash before conservation in what is a really cruel and cynical industry.’Between 8,000 and 12,000 lions are currently being held in some 300 captive breeding centres across South Africa.in which they are released into a fenced area and shot dead by trophy hunters.
Dr Jones added: ‘The international trade in lion bones is a relatively new thing but has grown enormously over the last decade. ‘If your aim is to extract a skeleton, then these farms do not have to worry about the conditions of the lions while they are alive.’Lion bones were once just a ‘by-product’ of the canned hunting industry, in which lions are bred to be shot by trophy hunters
Campaigners say that when the practice started in 2008, the bones came from lions that had been reared and then shot dead in canned hunts. Official figures show that 5,363 South African lion skeletons were sent abroad between 2008 and 2015. They also argue that wild lions are being poached and their skeletons traded as the law enforcement agencies cannot differentiate between legal and illegal bones.
