Officials with Alabama A&M University confirmed there was a shooting Monday afternoon at the Knight Complex West.
Alabama A&M Police Chief Montrez Payton told WAFF an officer was conducting a routine patrol of Knight Complex on the 5th floor when he heard shots fired below him. The officer responded and made contact with someone in the stairwell.
Officials say the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is and will be taking over the investigation. ALEA has since confirmed the individual who was injured was a student at the university.Students are seen on the campus of Alabama A&M on Monday following a shooting at the school. One person was injured.The shooting took place as students returned from spring break. One student says this was now how he envisioned his first day back.
Chief Payton says as ALEA takes over the investigation, his department will respond with an increased police presence on campus.
