John Mozley and Ben Tyler hatched an elaborate plot as they tried to trick police and their colleagues

Two shop workers burgled their own shop to cover up the fact they had been repeatedly stealing from its safe. John Mozley and Ben Tyler were employed as store manager and shop assistant respectively at Today's Extra on Thelwall New Road in Warrington when they plotted the audacious scheme to hide the fact they had stolen thousands of pounds. However, the bungling pair were undone when a sniffer dog traced Tyler to his nearby home address.

A large quantity of cigarettes worth around £2400, alcohol worth £966 and over £11,400 in cash from the safe were also stolen during the burglary . Despite the store being accessed, the alarm had not sounded and the alarm company were subsequently called to examine a potential fault. An engineer concluded the alarm wires had been cut at around 8.53am on Sunday June 11, which is when the smoke cloak had been activated in the store.
