Short prison sentences could be completely scrapped by Labour in favour of criminals receiving community orders instead.
The new scheme would look for long term solutions and could be headed by former justice secretary and Tory MP David Gauke, the BBC reported. The current justice secretary Shabana Mahmood is believed to want to bolster community sentences, potentially using electronic tags and booze detectors instead of jailing criminals.
After Labour's early release scheme earlier this year, Abigail Ampofo, interim chief executive of Refuge, told the Mirror: 'This is already an incredibly worrying time for survivors, and the continued failings of the justice system to prevent the release of domestic abuse perpetrators under this scheme are truly disappointing.
