Imanaga took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of a 5-0 victory over the Rockies, making for an unforgettable major-league debut.
CHICAGO — Three cameramen shadowed while he threw his warm-up pitches from the Wrigley Field mound. “Chelsea Dagger,” the goal song for the Chicago Blackhawks, blasted from the ballpark’s sound system. With high socks and no long sleeves, Imanaga dressed for Monday’s 43-degree weather like a Chicago Bears offensive lineman. Amid the elements, Imanaga looked right at home.
“He’s been so great at just making adjustments to what’s going on here,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “He takes in the right stuff, and then he kind of throws some stuff out. That ability to make adjustments — that’s being a player. You can tell he’s really good at it. I look forward to his journey of making those adjustments and seeing the league and then seeing what he has to do a little different. He’s capable of making all those adjustments. This is Day 1.
