Shrewsbury Town midfielder Carl Winchester celebrates reaching a significant milestone in his football career.
Carl Winchester paid tribute to his family, friends and teammates after reaching a remarkable milestone on Saturday. The Shrewsbury Town midfielder came off the bench against Leyton Orient to record his 500th appearance in professional football. It was a proud moment for the 31-year-old Belfast native who moved to England back in 2010.
The former Linfield youth joined Oldham Athletic 15 years ago and has gone on to feature for clubs including Cheltenham, Forest Green, Sunderland and current club Shrewsbury. Winchester - the twin brother of former Irish League midfielder Jude - described his 500th pro appearance as a 'proud moment' which would not have been possible without some of the sacrifices he and his family made over the years. Winchester told Shrewsbury Town's YouTube page: 'It obviously means a lot to myself, my family, friends and everyone back home. When I came to England I always wanted to have a career in football and to reach this milestone, I probably won't recognise it until I am retired. 'I will sit back then and see what I have achieved. So it is a proud moment today. 'I realised I was close a couple of weeks ago. I just thought if I get to this milestone it will be a great achievement, but also for everyone back home who sacrificed so much to get me here. 'The kit man got me a 500 shirt and all the lads signed it. Without them I couldn't have got here.
