A proposed large-scale chicken farm in Shropshire aiming to generate biogas from manure has been met with objections from local authorities due to concerns about water pollution. The council has demanded detailed plans outlining the farm's drainage system and wastewater management to prevent contamination of the River Tern.

A proposed £3.5 million chicken farm near Shawbury, Shropshire , designed to house 180,000 birds and generate biogas from manure for the National Grid , has encountered objections from local authorities. The farm, planned by SV Taylor and Partners, includes an anaerobic digester capable of processing nearly 2,000 tonnes of chicken manure annually into gas.

However, Telford & Wrekin Council has raised concerns about the farm's drainage system, specifically how it will prevent contaminated water from reaching the River Tern. Drainage experts at the council have requested detailed plans outlining the discharge route and measures to manage wastewater. The council has stated that the principle of foul and surface water drainage has not been adequately addressed and demands a comprehensive plan demonstrating how dirty water will be handled. Planning agent Ian Pick, representing SV Taylor and Partners, explained that the diversification into poultry production was driven by the financial instability of the dairy and arable sectors and the phasing out of agricultural subsidies post-Brexit. He emphasized that the decision to invest in this project was a strategic response to current economic challenges. The proposed farm will consist of four poultry houses, each accommodating 45,000 birds, along with associated infrastructure such as feed bins, water tanks, a generator, plant room, and car parking. The plan also includes an attenuation pond for managing storm water runoff. While the project aims to generate green energy, the council's concerns about potential environmental impacts, particularly regarding water contamination and odor emissions, must be addressed before the project can proceed.
