Sick kids, knackered toilets and a stack of 'empty promises' - reality of life in a Leeds tower block in 2023

Leeds tower block residents have opened up about their "chaotic" lives plagued with 'rats, slugs, damp, mould, leaky ceilings and knackered toilets'.

The building’s fate currently hangs in the balance. It could either be demolished or undergo a much-needed refurbishment. 'Mould and damp put my son in hospital' Young mum Megan Warbrick, 22, has lived in Ramshead Heights for three years with her three-year-old son Oscar. Ever since she’s moved in to her flat in September 2020, she has complained about black mould in Oscar’s bedroom. Over time, this has caused the toddler to suffer from breathing problems with repeated hospital visits.

“Since moving in here, it’s just been chaos. It’s not safe. I mean, just the amount of times he’s been to hospital, that’s not right. The council don’t do anything. “I have problems all the time and the council won’t do anything about it, not a thing. It’s not just mine, half of the flats are all the same.”

Recounting a dreadful time she was in and out of hospital, Carol said: “The council don’t do nowt. When I was in and out of hospital with asthma and delirium, they were working in the flat. They didn’t even move me. Michelle said: “I’ve got screws from the break room coming into my bedroom and my head goes on my bed. They drilled something on their side of the wall and the screws have come through my wall and they poke through and that’s where my headboard is as I can’t put my bed anywhere else.

'Rats' Michael Brook, who’s lived there for six years, says the flats are also crawling with rats who were scavaging in the bin storage unit on the ground floor. He says after he complained to the building manager, he was told to deal with the issue himself.
