There are reasons to think the Leafs aren’t out of this series. Not yet anyway — though Game 3 is obviously a must-win. Where can the Leafs find hope right now? Let’s start with the stars, writes jonassiegel.
It’s only because of Bobrovsky that Matthews doesn’t have a goal just yet. Matthews has beaten Bobrovsky for five goals in his career.
The Leafs should like their odds in this matchup and should want to lean hard on Matthews and Marner again in Game 3. Both came in around 25 minutes in Game 3.Game 2 offered some of the finest work from Nylander and Tavares all playoffs. The two of them really came alive in the second frame Thursday night. They were dynamic. They played fast. They put the Panthers on their heels. It was primarily a Nylander thing. He was moving. He was shaking. He was attacking.
Sheldon Keefe described him as a “dominant player” in that final frame. Nylander had four shots on six attempts in that period alone, including one off the crossbar. That’s not to mention the chances he created for those around him, Tavares especially. “He was the best player on the ice for either team by a mile, I thought,” Keefe said of Nylander’s third period performance. “He really took control of the game and created a number of looks for he and his linemates. Obviously was unable to get it to go over the line for us. That is the next step and obviously the ultimate goal. But the way that William took charge of the game in the third period shows what he’s capable of doing and what we need more of.”https://cdn.theathletic.
