The Sigerson Cup is back to its core focus: highlighting the brightest young Gaelic football talent in Ireland. With a roster of over 500 players and strong teams from various universities, the competition promises exciting matchups and the potential for future inter-county stars to emerge.
Gone are the days of Sigerson Cup squads laced with established top stars from the inter-county game and even All-Ireland winners. The Sigerson has gone back to what it was originally, a serious competition for the most exciting emerging young talent in the country. With over 500 players listed, scores of clubs up and down the country will have at least one of their own involved in the squads released recently, and which can be found below.
A good Sigerson can act as a springboard onto the inter-county scene, or see a fringe county player emerge as a leading light. Last year Ulster University landed the title and the holders look strong again with Tyrone regulars Ben Cullen, Ciaran Daly and Ruairi Canavan, as well as Donegal’s Ciaran Moore, Down’s Danny Magill and Derry’s Eoin McEvoy. University College Galway (UCG) also have considerable firepower with Kerry’s Dylan Geaney, Roscommon’s Ruairi Fallon and Galway duo Cillian Ó Curraoin and Liam Ó Conghaile. University College Cork (UCC) could also have a major say after landing the Division 1 League title (Ryan Cup) before Christmas in a free-scoring victory over Dublin City University (DCU). DCU are perennial contenders, as are University College Dublin (UCD), who have rising Offaly star Cormac Egan, Mayo regular Sam Callinan, Dublin’s Luke Breathnach and Theo Clancy and Derry’s Donncha Gilmore. UCD look to have the strongest squad with crack Roscommon forwards Daire Cregg and Ben O’Carroll, Meath duo Aaron Lynch and Diarmuid Moriarty and Monaghan regular Ryan O’Toole. Maynooth, with a raft of Meath players, including Conor Gray, Eoghan Frayne, Ruairia Kinsella and Brian O'Halloran could be a potential darkhorse. There are four ties on Tuesday with another four on Wednesday
