Since at least mid-2023, an undisclosed entity has been stealthily implanting a backdoor, dubbed J-Magic , into select Juniper routers across the globe. The backdoor has been discovered in critical sectors such as semiconductor, energy, and manufacturing, raising concerns about the potential for widespread compromise.
The primary method of infection remains unclear, but the backdoor's presence in approximately half of the affected devices, which are configured as VPN gateways, suggests a targeted approach.J-Magic operates in a covert manner, residing solely in the device's memory. It passively monitors network traffic for specific predefined patterns, known as 'magic packets', before activating. Once a magic packet is detected, the backdoor establishes a connection with the sender and initiates a challenge-response protocol. If the sender successfully decrypts a random alphanumeric string, they gain command-line access to the compromised router, effectively granting complete control.This potent combination of stealthy execution and remote access capabilities poses a significant threat to the targeted organizations.
