Learn a simple trick to select fresher grapes that will last longer: Check the stem color. Green stems indicate freshness, while brown stems suggest the grapes are nearing the end of their shelf life. This advice has been endorsed by social media and experts like Martha Stewart and Rutul Joshi.
Your grapes could last for much longer if you check one thing before you buy them. Grapes are a popular fruit that are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and fibre that can support heart health , eye health, and brain function.
But as many people will know, they don't always last very long when you get them home from the supermarket . While grapes are deliciously juicy and crunchy when fresh, they can become mushy and horrible when they've been left out for too long. This can seem to happen within a matter of days after buying them, but according to one trick shared on social media , you can do something to guarantee your grapes will last much longer. In an Instagram video shared by Anne Caserta, who regularly shares life hacks online, checking the stems of your grapes before you buy them can lend a valuable insight into how long the fruit will last. She said: 'See that brown stem? That's an indication not to buy the grapes. See this bright green stem? That means they are fresh, they are crisp, and they are sweet. That's how you can tell.' Anne urged people in her caption to 'check the stems before you buy grapes', as she said you always want to go for grapes that have a bright green stem - as these are usually fresher and will therefore last much longer. The advice has even been backed by kitchen guru Martha Stewart, as an article was shared on her website in February stating that grapes attached to brown stems are no good. In the article, Rutul Joshi, director of produce merchandising at online grocer FreshDirect, said: 'Grapes will lose moisture over time, and the first thing to notice is the stems will dry, and eventually the grapes will soften, with some slight skin wrinkling.' Dr Irwin R. Donis-González, assistant professor of cooperative extension in postharvest engineering at UC Davis, also shared similar sentiments while speaking to The Kitchn , stating that the stems lose moisture before the fruit, so brown stems are an indication that the fruit is further along in the ripening process. Commenters on Anne's video were thankful for the advice, with many saying they didn't know about the trick. Others argued that they prefer grapes with brown stems because they're often not as 'tart'. While this can be true, you may still want to buy the green-stemmed grapes so they can ripen at home. One person said: 'Thank you for the tips!' Another added: 'I learnt something today!' A third posted: 'I was today years old when I learnt this.' Grapes should be stored in your fridge, ideally in the salad drawer at the bottom, as this has a cool and stable temperature. They should be left in their original ventilated packaging, but you should place a paper towel inside to help absorb excess moisture and replace it when it becomes damp. Don't seal grapes in an airtight container unless you're sure they're completely dry, and make sure you keep them away from strong-smelling foods like onion and garlic, as they can pick up odours. Finally, only wash your grapes when you're about to eat them. Washing them before they're placed in the fridge can speed up mould growth, as it's very hard to get grapes dry again.
