Behind Fraser-Pryce were compatriots Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah, who took silver and bronze respectively. The same Jamaican trio achieved the feat at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo – Thompson-Herah winning her second gold on that occasion – with the Caribbean island also doing it at the 2008 Games in Beijing. She remains one of the most successful – and popular – women in sport, having also claimed a total of eight Olympic medals, with three of them gold.
This was Fraser-Pryce’s fifth world title. She said after her latest triumph: “I can’t even imagine the amount of times I’ve had setbacks and I’ve bounced back and I’m here again. “I feel blessed to have this talent and to continue to do it at 35, having a baby, still going, and hopefully inspiring women that they can make their own journey.”
