It was a headline that fuelled the preconceived notion that mental health sufferers were ‘crazy’ and needed to be removed from society.However, research has shown that issues regarding mental health still have the negative stigma attached with the African Caribbean and Asian communities.
“It’s very much about you keeping your business behind closed doors, you don’t want to tell anybody because people may frown upon it. Shafaq noticed a spike in reported cases of mental health issues in the Birmingham area and especially amongst black men, with more coming forward to seek help. She also observed there was a lot of anxiety involved with people often asking when everything was going to go back to normal.
Shafaq theorised that one of the issues is that men do not share their emotions. “Men first and foremost tend not to talk about their emotions whatever ethnicity they are. “Because of the racism black men face and because of the barriers to education and employment that all combined affects emotional wellbeing.”
