Deputy PM, Angela Rayner has not ruled out axeing the single-person discount on council tax given to single parent households
Council tax could be heavily increased for single parents under new government plans. It's possible the current 25 % single parent discount could be scrapped.
This is a discount given to 'single-person households' where there is only one adult living in the house.'Grossly unfair' Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Ms Rayner was asked if the government 'has no plans to increase council tax as they assured us before the election' to which she confirmed this was correct. It's led to charities speaking out.
'This will undoubtedly cause additional stress for many single parents who are already nearly twice as likely to live in poverty as couple-parent families,' she said. When will this happen? The government has not confirmed anything yet – we may not see a scrapping to the discount at all. However, Labour has said there will be an increase to certain taxes – although, ruled out an increase on taxes on 'working people'.
