A sinkhole opened in the middle of a residential road in South Shields, England, swallowing three cars and leaving local drivers in shock. Emergency services responded to the scene, evacuating families living nearby and working to repair the damaged water main.
Shocking pictures have emerged showing three cars partially swallowed by a sinkhole that opened in the middle of a residential road, leaving local drivers devastated upon discovering their vehicles trapped. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Broughton Road in South Shields just after 5:30 am this morning following reports of the tarmac collapsing.
While thankfully no one has been injured, several families living near the newly formed sinkhole have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. The area has been cordoned off and emergency services remain on site. The collapse has also damaged a water main, according to Northumbrian Water, resulting in bottled water being delivered to a nearby care home experiencing low pressure or no water. Kiera Hall, a 17-year-old student, was left in tears when she found her black car, which she had only owned for two weeks, submerged in the sinkhole. 'I got really lucky, there's only a mark on the front,' she said, describing her emotional reaction. 'I was sobbing this morning. I looked into the street and saw blue lights. My car was vertical in the hole and I burst into tears. I passed my driving test two days before Christmas and got my car two weeks ago, and this has happened.'Northumbria Police are currently guarding the area until the sinkhole can be repaired. A spokesperson for the force stated, 'Emergency services are currently in attendance and no one is reported to have been injured.' Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their involvement, saying, 'We can confirm that today, an appliance is in attendance of an incident in South Tyneside. A crew from South Shields Community Fire Station was dispatched to the scene following a number of emergency calls at 5.45 a.m. reporting a portion of a road collapsing on Broughton Road. The incident is still ongoing, and no casualties have been reported. Our firefighters are currently still on scene supporting our blue light partners and the local authorities.' This recent incident follows a previous sinkhole in Yorkshire last month which gained notoriety as a 'five-star' attraction on Google Maps. The road section affected by that sinkhole has been closed for weeks, causing disruption for drivers, according to local YouTuber Wandering Turnip, who documented the frustration of local residents. The sinkhole, now dubbed 'The Hole,' has surprisingly been reviewed on Google Maps with several amusing five-star ratings. One visitor, Matt Paling, wrote, 'This is the best Hole this side of Hebden bridge! I mean I've been to Tod side and the view is nothing compared to Hebden. Five stars! Fantastic, needs a Costa or other chain coffee shop.
