Eight days later Charlton gets back into gentle training with some young fans in the backyard of his home in Beatrice Street, Ashington. Charlton scores his and England’s second goal in the 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over Portugal at Wembley, en route to his and England’s greatest triumph. Another Wembley occasion to remember for Charlton. Here he guides United’s opening goal past Benfica’s goalkeeper José Henrique to set the team en route to a 4-1 win, again after extra time, in the European Cup final.
Charlton celebrates his side’s goal against Sheffield United. The last of his 758 appearances for the club came a few days later at Chelsea. He scored 249 goals for United.
