Sir Chris Hoy is urging more men to check for their risk of prostate cancer - after nearly 300,000 people used an online tool following his diagnosis.
Sir Chris Hoy is advocating for greater discussion around men's health - as part of a campaign aiming to encourage up to half a million people to check for prostate cancer, a condition he has publicly disclosed as terminal. Following his personal announcement, in October, Prostate Cancer UK reported that nearly 300,000 men completed an online check, with over 75 per cent identified as being at risk due to factors such as family history.
He attributed that not to stigma, but rather a lack of consideration: "Not because there was a stigma attached to it necessarily but just because it probably wasn't on our radar," he went on. The six-time Olympic Gold medallist and father of two, whose wife Sarra also endures the challenges of multiple sclerosis , reflected on his decision to discuss his own health, continuing: "We thought long and hard about it, particularly with young kids, but it felt the right thing to do and it felt like we could make a difference."
She highlighted the response from men with a family predisposition, adding: "Importantly, because I think this is what resonates with Sir Chris's story, is that we have seen 40,000 men with family history - because it is about making men aware that yes there's a risk of prostate cancer but actually family history is a higher risk - and the fact we have had so many men coming forward in that area - I think is a fact that really resonates.
