In an article launching the News Media Association’s Journalism Matters campaign, the Prime Minister said publishers must have control over their content as AI develops

Journalism is the “lifeblood of democracy” and publishers should have control over and seek payment for their work as AI technology continues to transform our economy and way of life, Sir Keir Starmer says. The Prime Minister pledged his government would “always champion press freedoms”.

Journalism Matters week is dedicated to honouring the extraordinary work that UK journalists carry out, day in, day out – from shining a light on corruption to holding power to account, all in the public interest. Run by the NMA on behalf of the industry, Journalism Matters is a weeklong celebration of the importance of journalism to our democratic way of life which hundreds of news media titles take part in every year.

Journalism is the lifeblood of democracy. Journalists are guardians of democratic values. These simple facts are so woven into the fabric of our society, that we often take them for granted. This year I fought tooth and nail for the honour of serving our country as Prime Minister. And at every step of the way, I was robustly held to account by determined, incisive and irrepressible members of the fourth estate.

An extraordinary image that brought home both the risks and the purpose of journalism. That, through the bravery of journalists, the world sees what it needs to see.
