The Labour leader will vow in his keynote conference speech to 'fight the Tories on economic growth' while insisting his party is now 'the political wing of the British people'

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer will on Tuesday pitch himself as a new Tony Blair who has made Labour “the party of the centre ground” that is ready to take power from the Conservatives.

He will pledge to create one million new jobs across the country through a “green prosperity plan” put into action by “the biggest partnership between government, business and communities this country has ever seen”. His evocation of Sir Tony Blair is designed to demonstrate that, like New Labour in the nineties, the party is ready to take power from the Tories presiding over a faltering economy.

“You saw on Sunday that clear demonstration of how the Labour Party has changed, not just in the way in which the tribute to the Queen was embraced by conference but also in the results in the debates around the policy and motions.“And that is something that we absolutely want to see.” The Labour spokesman meanwhile committed the party to be “borrowing less” than the current Government as they said Sir Keir would now be taking on the Tories on politics rather than character, as he did under Boris Johnson.
