The Dons have made three signings so far this summer and have identified the experienced midfielder as a possible target.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is reportedly planning to be reunited with experienced Norwegian midfielder Sivert Heltne Nilsen by bringing him to Pittodrie.

Since taking up the reins in the Granite City earlier this summer, the Swede has bolstered his options with three new signings having captured Shelbourne defender Gavin Molloy, Ujpest forward Peter Ambrose and goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov from Premiership rivals St Johnstone. And according to the Scottish Sun, the 46-year-old wants to recruit Nilsen, who previously played under him for two years at previous club Elfsborg in Sweden.

Heltne Nilsen, 32, started his career with Hodd before spells with fellow Norwegian sides Valerenga and Brann. The central midfielder then joined Horsens in Denmark before two seasons with Elfsborg between 2019 and 2021. A short stint in Belgium with SK Beveren followed before he returned to current club Brann for a second spell in the same year. The former Norway U23 international is now the club captain and helped Brann lift the Norwegian Cup in the 2023 season.

Should he arrive at Pittodrie then he will fill a void left by academy graduate Connor Barron's move to Rangers last month. The Reds however still have healthy competition in midfield with the likes of skipper Graeme Shinnie, ex Liverpool kid Leighton Clarkson, Dante Polvara and Republic of Ireland international Jamie McGrath all battling it out for starting berths.
