The Scottish SPCA has reported a 300 per cent rise in queries about rehoming due to the cost of living crisis
.
“It’s now plain that the cost of living crisis is even harder than the pandemic, which caused a lot of hardship for many pet owners. She said: “In the first nine months of this year we noted that calls from people to give up their pets trebled, compared to the previous year. “We are getting more and more reports of people coming in and they often have to be persuaded to leave with some food for themselves, as the crisis they are perceiving starts with their pet.
“So we really desperately want to do what we can to keep them together, as we’re talking about bonds that can be compared to family in many instances.“It’s so much better to keep our animals and people together. The SSPCA link with food banks started this summer and it soon grew to 16 centres within a couple of months. At the last count it was up to 33 and more are expected to come on board.
