'If a politician only speaks to interviewers who are his cheerleaders, audiences aren't going to be any better informed,' says adamboultonSKY

Ms Byrne didn't have long to wait for proof of the pudding. The usual excuses for"not doing Channel 4" were offered. A prime minister's time is always in short supply.

If a politician only speaks to interviewers who are his cheerleaders, audiences aren't going to be any better informed. It is routine for interviewees, or more precisely the pesky entourage of advisers and PR people with which they now surround themselves, to try to set conditions about what will be asked and what won't and where and when. At Sky News we reject such deals.

But Team Johnson should not play favourites. When I first became a TV reporter at Westminster, Mrs Thatcher's press secretary Bernard Ingham told me that as far as he was concerned TV-am, the channel I represented, was a national news broadcaster and would be treated in the same way as any of our competitors.

New Labour wanted to appear on as many outlets as possible, especially those which might be inclined against them. Just put out a tweet or post some video. They can even send different messages to different people - Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson's senior adviser deployed this strategy triumphantly for Vote Leave during the Brexit referendum.Image:The second transformation is thanks to the growth of the political PR industry.
