In 1984 the presence of dinosaur fossils in Scotland was confirmed for the first time.

Parts of the Isle of Skye have been found to have fossils key to understanding dinosaurs of the Middle Jurassic period. The first fossil was found in 1982, but the discovery was not made public until 1984. Since then palaeontologists have been fascinated by the island. Some of the finds - including footprints - have been made by people who have lived and worked on Skye, including Paul Booth.Skye is one of the few places in the world where dinosaur fossils from the Middle Jurassic have been found.

Prof Andrews said: "I went back to him and I said: 'Did you say no-one's ever found any dinosaur remains on Skye?'Prof Andrews and his supervisor measured and recorded the fossil and the rock it was in - and then had to leave it where it was. The discovery remained a secret until 1983 when experts arrived to remove it. Unfortunately the fossil split in two.

Dr Neil Clark, curator of palaeontology at The Hunterian, recalls how part of another bone was uncovered by BP oil workers on a field trip in 1994.
