Slip up for veteran Venus Williams shatters Wimbledon dreams Knee injury halts five-time SW19 singles champion at All England Club return in battle of wildcards

Ukrainian Svitolina, who had been missing from the WTA Tour until the spring having become a mother last October, ran out a worthy 6-4 6-3 winner in 91 minutes to end Williams’ interest. Williams saved a set point in the ninth game of the opening set, but it was Svitolina who took the opening set. The seven-time grand slam champion turned on the style to break Svitolina, when the 28-year-old first served for the match at 5-2, but couldn’t maintain the momentum.
There’s often been rumours that she would retire soon, especially as her younger sister Serena left the professional circuit after her 2022 US Open appearance. Maybe she will follow suit at Flushing Meadows, which starts next month.
