Slovakia has secured a guarantee from Putin that Russia's Gazprom will find an alternative route to deliver gas after the expiration of the Ukraine transit deal.
Vladimir Putin has pledged to Slovakia that Russia ’s Gazprom would find an alternative route to supply contracted natural gas to the landlocked central European country after the end of the transit deal with Ukraine , Slovakia ’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was quoted as saying on Friday. Fico has defied the EU and met with Putin in Moscow at the end of December to discuss Russia n gas supply to Slovakia ahead of the halt to deliveries via Ukraine .
Hungary will continue to receive Russian gas via the TurkStream gas pipeline via Turkey and the Balkans, while Austria and Slovakia have arranged to have natural gas from other sources supplied. A day ahead of the stoppage of the supply via Ukraine, Slovakia threatened to suspend electricity deliveries to Ukraine after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his decision to not extend the natural gas transit deal with Gazprom.
