How a tiny outback suburb inspired an award-winning podcast, an HBO documentary, and a TV series “inspired by true events”.

If you rewind the clock to 2017, you would be hard-pressed to find many people who knew the Northern Territory town of Larrimah existed, beyond the 12 permanent residents who called it home. A speck in the Top End, it was an outback outpost that didn’t demand attention. If you found yourself lost in Larrimah, chances were you didn’t want to be found.

“Australians consider the outback part of our national identity, and having that as the scene where this crime played out really fascinated people,” Stevenson says. “Also, we’re in this armchair detective era, and an open-ended case is such a big drawcard for audiences these days, so we attracted a lot of amateur sleuths.

The documentary was a huge success, topping Australia’s most-viewed on Netflix for three weeks, reaching the top 10 in the United Kingdom, and finding a large US audience with streaming service HBO Max.
