The Rotary Club of Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire told the Telegraph that the endless amount of health and safety paperwork meant it was no longer hosting the fair on December 6.
Organisers of a village Christmas fair have cancelled the event for the first time in 25 years because they were asked to put in an 'insurmountable' amount of measures to prevent a potential terrorist attack.
The fair is run by the parish council and usually attracts around 4,000 people to its 110 stalls each year. 'Unfortunately, it seems that even these measures and the completion of a 67-page health and safety compliance document are not enough and 2024 would see this documentation almost double in volume.'
Instead, the village will be holding a series of scaled-down Christmas events - including a late night shopping event - 'which don't involve road closures and unrealistic compliance requirements'. But Graham Marsh, the deputy leader of the Conservative-led East Lindsey district council, said the authority 'has to open people's eyes to litigation because we live in such litigious times now'.
But, as businesses basked in the bumper success, Labour councillors said the event had become a 'risk to public safety'.
