After a second place finish last year, Smithson Valley's boys golf team returns to the state tournament with its sights set on a championship

After concluding last season with silver medals around their necks, members of Smithson Valley ’s boys golf team believe they were capable of more. The good news for the Rangers is five of those golfers returned for the senior seasons, and the better news is they get another chance for gold when the UIL state boys golf championships begin on Monday. Smithson Valley is competing in the Class 5A tournament scheduled for Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown .

Lake Creek pulled ahead with a second round 292, while Smithson Valley carded a 299, six strokes behind. “We didn’t play our best and we still got second, and we have the same team going in,” Griff said. “I mean, I think we have a shot.” Pape said the team has been focused on this tournament since August. He believes his team will be motivated because it’s the final high school tournament for all of them. “We got second last year, and now let’s try to get on that gold stand,” Pape said.
