Heavy snowfall and icy conditions cause major disruption on Greater Manchester roads, leading to long delays and impassable roads.
Icy weather and a rather unexpected dumping of snow has caused havoc on roads in Greater Manchester . There have been long delays on the M56, M60 and M62 motorways this morning (January 9) due to the weather. Issues included huge tailbacks on the M60 between junctions one and 11. Elsewhere, there are several roads across the region which became impassable due to snow.
A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice is in force until 11am for parts of the North West including Wigan, where a number of schools have closed. But there has been heavy snowfall in parts of Manchester, Stockport and Trafford this morning - causing major disruption on the region's roads. The A555 Manchester Airport relief road remains mostly closed due to the recent floods and wintry weather. It is closed in both directions between Handforth and Poynton, and westbound to Styal Road. Heavy snow also led to the following incidents on major roads, which have now either eased or fully cleared: A number of smaller roads across Greater Manchester are also thought to have been affected by snow and ice today
