SNP members have united behind a policy of securing a majority of seats at the next UK election to trigger independence negotiations with Westminster.
The SNP will demand independence talks with the UK Government if they win a majority of Scottish seats at the general election. The new policy was agreed after First Minister Humza Yousaf backed the strategy and called for unity in his fractious party.
Yousaf, after he succeeded Sturgeon, then proposed that winning 'most' seats would be sufficient, but he changed tack on Sunday. The revised approach, backed by Yousaf and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, would see the SNP argue that winning 29 seats should trigger talks. “If the Westminster parties want a test for popular support the proposition of independence, let’s do it via a referendum. If they give us the powers I will hold the referendum tomorrow. But in an election a majority of seats is a victory, plain and simple.”
He went on: “While setting our Westminster goal as winning a majority of seats….if we win that majority that will be our mandate to begin negotiations with the UK Government of how to put into democratic affect the decision of the Scottish people.”
