Police have arrested 14 people following 'disgraceful scenes of violence and disorder' in Glasgow.

Government has spoken out against the 'disgraceful scenes of violence and disorder' that erupted in Glasgow on Saturday following Celtic's fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title triumph.

Fourteen people have been arrested as around 3,000 supporters descended on the Trongate on Saturday afternoon, following Martin O'Neill's side's 3-1 victory over Hearts atPolice Scotland confirmed that officers had "missiles, including glass bottles" hurled at them while attending to a medical emergency in the area. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland of Police Scotland revealed that two officers sustained injuries during the disorder in the Trongate, while three members of the public were either hurt or suffered medical episodes.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman stated: "The disgraceful scenes of violence and disorder that took place in Glasgow are completely unacceptable and we strongly condemn all abusive and antisocial behaviour. Police Scotland has the powers to deal robustly with football-related disorder and we fully support officers to respond appropriately and protect the public.

", reportsShe added: "The Scottish Government has worked with partners including football authorities, fans representatives, local authorities and others on what more can be done to tackle this behaviour and recently closed a consultation on whether the law on Football Banning Orders should be updated to help tackle various forms of football-related disorder. " John Sweeney is due to address the matter further tomorrow when he faces the press.

The areas surrounding the Gallowgate and Glasgow Cross were flooded with green and white from 2.30pm on Saturday, as elated supporters poured out of the stadium in their droves. Footage circulating on social media captured skirmishes within the crowd and a number of confrontations with police officers. By approximately 7.30pm, the streets had largely cleared, though considerable amounts of litter had been left strewn across the area.

The trouble followed earlier accusations from Police Scotland that Celtic had neglected to establish adequate plans for official Premiership title celebrations. The 3–1 triumph over the Jambos sealed the Scottish Premiership title for Martin O'Neill's Celtic side. Hearts players were escorted from the pitch as thousands of Celtic supporters spilled onto the field in the wake of the final goal.

The Edinburgh club subsequently released a statement condemning the "shameful" scenes, saying: "Reports of serious physical and verbal abuse towards our players and staff, both on the pitch and elsewhere, are deeply disturbing.

"We will make no further comment at this time other than to say that it is completely unacceptable that our players and staff were put in that situation. "
