Carol Monaghan said that the former deputy first minister was 'incredibly popular' within the SNP but said the new leader should have 'wider appeal'.
An SNP MP has said potential SNP leadership candidate John Swinney wouldn't worry the party's opponents.
The Glasgow North West MP also said that many of the people endorsing Swinney also supported Humza Yousaf in his bid to become leader. Swinney has been urged to stand by some high-profile party figures including Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth. They both backed Yousaf last year.
He stepped back from the Scottish Government last year after 16 years in office. He served as the finance, education and covid recovery secretary.This was despite her campaign getting off to a poor start as she said she would have voted against gay marriage and that people shouldn't have children outside of wedlock.
