The SNP is pushing for a symbolic vote on compensation for Waspi women, despite the government's refusal to budge. This move has sparked internal divisions within Labour, with some MPs expressing support for the Waspi cause while others remain loyal to the party line. The upcoming vote is expected to highlight the ongoing tension between Labour MPs who campaigned for Waspi women and the leadership's position on the issue.
The SNP has been accused of staging a ‘stunt’ in holding the symbolic vote - but Labour MPs remain ‘stressed and jumpy’ over the issuehave urged Labour MPs to back the SNP ’s push for compensation payments as the pensions row returns to parliament on Tuesday.
Brian Leishman, Labour MP for Alloa and Grangemouth in Scotland, said he would be siding with the SNP and “voting for justice for the Waspi women” – even if resulted in his suspension by the chief whip. An MP planning to side with the SNP predicted that the new Labour MPs who had criticised the compensation decision would vote with the Government due to “threats” from the whips’ office.
The MP said the whips’ office was telling Labour MPs that Tuesday’s Waspi vote was “the SNP playing politics” and precited “that will be enough to vote with the Government”. Anne Potter, coordinator of the Waspi Glasgow and Lanarkshire group, said Tuesday’s vote was a chance for MPs “to demonstrate their disappointment at the shocking announcement”.
