SUNDAY MAIL EXCLUSIVE: The veteran MSP has spoken out about concerns he's had about policy and deals with the Green Party.

SNP rebel Fergus Ewing has vowed to stay in the party and fight extreme policies he believes are hurting voters.

“We are going through a period at the moment where we’ve chosen the wrong path. We’ve associated ourselves with extremists. “That means being humble, admitting when we’ve got something wrong, putting things right and taking great care that infrastructure projects are delivered on time and on budget. It also means a major overhaul of how we manage our health service and how we improve our education system. These are the basics of good pragmatic government and we need to get back to it.”

He tore up a consultation document in Holyrood on the now abandoned fishing ban in Highly Protected Marine Areas as well as attacking ministers over a lack of progress on dualling the A9. Last month he rebelled in a vote over calls for a 12-month delay to a short-term lets licensing scheme. “But I do want to send out a positive message in the hope that Humza will take it up because he’s capable of listening. He has reluctantly been dragged into tearing up policies that I had already torn up literally in the case of Highly Protected Marine Areas.

The disastrous deposit return scheme was scrapped earlier this year, with the Scottish Government blaming Westminster for failing to provide an exemption to the UK Internal Market Act.
