A social enterprise in Bangalow, in the Byron hinterland of northern NSW, is creating jobs for people struggling after losing everything to flooding or shut out from mainstream employment.

The 32-year-old was one of the first employees at the Beacon Laundry — a social enterprise in Bangalow , in the Byron hinterland of northern NSW, designed to create jobs for people who have been shut out from mainstream employment.

The Byron Shire is known for its rich and famous residents, but the wider Northern Rivers region has a high rate of unemployment and homelessness, exacerbated by devastating floods in 2022. "Every community needs a Beacon Laundry, particularly people like Mel, who may need an extra level of support that mainstream workplaces don't provide."After losing his wife to renal failure, and his farm to fire, John Hardisty lost his remaining possessions in the 2022 floods.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who visited the Bangalow laundry on Wednesday, said the social enterprise model can play an important role in providing employment."We want to ensure everybody who wants a secure, good paying job can access one and earn the economic security to make a good life for themselves and their families," he said.
