Social media firms face fines up to billions of pounds if they target children with “addictive” features to keep them online under a new legally-enforced code unveiled on Monday.
Elizabeth Denham, the official data watchdog, has ruled the firms should not use “sticky” features such as notifications, continuous scrolling, auto-play or reward loops in games or videos to encourage children to stay online for hours.
