SoftBank is reportedly finalizing a massive $40 billion investment in OpenAI, significantly boosting its valuation to an estimated $300 billion. This investment is expected to support OpenAI's development of advanced AI infrastructure and its partnership with SoftBank to create 'Cristal intelligence,' an enterprise AI solution. The deal also grants SoftBank priority access to OpenAI's latest AI models in Japan.

The AI investment landscape is undergoing another significant shift, with SoftBank reportedly finalizing a $40 billion stake in OpenAI, propelling its valuation to an estimated $300 billion. According to CNBC, the yet-to-be-closed SoftBank investment is projected to commence payouts as early as spring and continue over the next one to two years.

A portion of the funding is anticipated to support OpenAI's Stargate project, which endeavors to construct advanced AI infrastructure with the potential to revolutionize the field. This potential investment wouldn't even be SoftBank's first OpenAI-related announcement in February, despite the month being only a week old. On February 3rd, the company announced a partnership to develop and market an enterprise AI solution they call 'Cristal intelligence.' SoftBank claims this AI will securely integrate the systems and data of businesses in a customized manner for each deployment. Once established, Cristal would leverage OpenAI's technologies to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. SoftBank Group Corp. will commit $3 billion annually to deploy OpenAI's solutions across its group companies, marking itself as the first company globally to integrate Cristal intelligence at scale. As part of the deal, SoftBank and OpenAI have formed a joint venture named 'SB OpenAI Japan' to market Cristal to major Japanese companies. The partnership also guarantees SoftBank and its affiliated companies, including Arm, priority access in Japan to the latest and most cutting-edge models developed by OpenAI. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has been a vocal advocate for AI, predicting last year that an artificial superintelligence 10,000 times more intelligent than a human brain would emerge within the next decade if sufficient investment is channeled into its development. Microsoft, in its 2024 annual report, labeled OpenAI a competitor, noting that OpenAI's products rival its own AI offerings, even though many Microsoft-branded tools rely on OpenAI's models. The software giant has been heavily invested in the development and deployment of AI technologies, positioning itself as a leader in the field. We have reached out to SoftBank and OpenAI to confirm the new investment and Microsoft to inquire about its perspective on the development, but have yet to receive a response.
